See your site in other browsers (for free)

As web developers, we all know browsercam.com, a paid service that creates screen captures of your web pages loaded in any browser and on any operating system. With over 12 browsers and many operating systems and resolution, it is an expensive but vital service.

I had not seen any alternatives, but now Daniel Vine has written a free service that allows you to see your site as it looks in various versions of Mac, IE and PC browsers. It does not offer the variety of browsercam, but it covers the essential browsers and has won a spot in my favorites.

Mac Safari 1.2 browser: www.danvine.com/icapture/

Encrypt email link on web pages

Posting your email address on a website is a sure-fire way to get an inbox full of unsolicited email advertisement. The Enkoder protects email addresses by converting them into encrypted Javascript code, hiding them from the email-harvesting robots while revealing them to real people.

Keeping track of programming tasks

When writing code, there is a lot a programmer needs to keep track of: variables, functions, parameters and their integration with other modules and pages. And as your coding away, you are reminded of other things that you have to do when you are done with the line you are writing.

Most of the times the only place where this information resides is in my brain and it will take me a good time to pick up where I left off just a few days ago.

I know that there is sophisticated project management software that will keep track of all tasks, but I have found this very simple to-do-list application that will do exactly what I need. Keep track of my programming to do list for a particular project in a simple manner. The data is stored in an XML file, so you could have it online and have oher developers access it as well. No installation required, just a standalone executable.

Anyways, you can find it here: www.codeproject.com/...

Road Runner Flash Portal

This amazing portal reminds us of what Flash is capable of and is cleverly applied to an application that we used to think "just could not be done in Flash". See for yourself how enjoyable surfing through this site is and you may even make it your homepage...

Meet people with same interests

Ofcourse there are the known software usergroups, but here are many more topics than computer stuff....(yes, there actually is more in life than programming!)

Meetup is a free service that organizes local gatherings about anything, anywhere. You will be surprised how many people are meeting in your area with similar interest in a similar topic you like.

Highlight your code with this online tool

How many times have you needed to post a piece of code in HTML and manually had to color and highlight the classes, methods and properties?

Well, suffer no more....this tool will work for C#, VB.NET, J# and SQL in the first place, but AS and other languages will work as well. Let's see how long it takes for someone to come up with one for Actionscript.

SoThink Glanda Flash Tool on Microsoft.com

I am somewhat surprised that doing a search for Flash on microsoft.com returned so few results. One of these reults was for SoThink Glanda Flash Tool.

This tool is a simple Flash tool that allows for quick creations of mostly ad-type Flash animations. Developed in China, it is nothing fancy, but not terribly bad either. It also comes with a SWF decompiler for extracting symbols out of swf's.

In any case, my surprise was that microsoft had done little to somehow integrate Flash into their ASP.NET or Windows software applications and, not having their own swf producing software, instead promotes an application of an unknown and small software firm.....

I have wondered why Microsoft hasn't taken any steps to competing with Macromedia and Adobe and come out with a swf producing tool. So, why are they promoting this software? Is this a hint of what is to come? We'll see.....

Making time to read a book

I can not find enough time in a day to get all things done and do the things I would like to do. I wish I could find time to read a good book. I do commute about 30 minutes each way and besides listening to the news, music and commercials, most of the times it is simply one hour a day of wasted time.

I recently checked some of my old, old bookmarks and I found a site that I had registered to, back in 1998 (and login still worked!). This site allows you to download commercial audio books to your computer, pocket pc, palm and even burn it on cd. For example, I am listening this week to -A brief History of Time- by Stephen Hawkin (5 hours and 49 minutes) , which I purchased for only $14.95! Plenty of categories should satisfy every reader or listener and for me... it is hardly ever a dull moment stuck in traffic again.

GreetingCardBuilder.com

I have built and mentioned this site a while ago, but no visitors. It is sort of a personal experiment and I am waiting to see what happens. No big hopes anyways.

The idea of GreetingCardBuilder.com was born out of realization that e-card sites do not allow enough customization on the cards and therefore the cards lose the personal touch or true meaning of the message they intend to convey. What better technology than Flash MX to create a greeting card building application, giving you the flexibility to change any or all aspects of the card?

Kartoo search engine

At the last Coldfusion User Group where I was invited to speak about Flash Remoting, a member pointed out a terrific example of a Flash application. It is a search engine like no other, giving you visual detail of the relevance of your searches. The size of the symbol represents the relevance and the connections, well the related sites to the specific words you typed in.

The accuracy is also pretty good. I did a search for a site that I recently build and it came back with that site, plus all other sites I have built.
