Add Google Map in less than 10 minutes

Posted by on 18th January, 2006

If you need to know how to add Google Maps to your website, keep reading… Exploration Age explains the details… First you need a Google Maps API key, which you can obtain here.  You can find out much more here with plenty of details of anything you might want to know about Google Maps, especially if you plan to extend your new map beyond this example. Check out this nice detailed tutorial with excellent and good examples by Joshua Siler… (via Exploration Age) Update: if times allows, over the next week I'll play with it and may post a new entry in the experiments section… [button link=”http://blog.explorationage.com” color=”#FFFFCC” size=”1″...

Raining in Seattle

Posted by on 14th January, 2006

Unbelievable. Of course I had been warned about the amount of rain in Seattle before moving here. And figuring I had lived in South Florida for 6 years, I thought little else could top the frequent tropical rainstorms and floodings that I had experienced there. In Seattle it is not necesarily the amount of rain but it is this constant drizzle and grey, overcast skies that leads people to complain about the weather here. It really doesn't bother me too much. It hasn't been cold enough for that rain to turn into snow yet, but it may happen tonight…temperatures are expected to fall so we may get a few...

Where have I been?

Posted by on 12th January, 2006

Many moons have passed since I wrote my last entry and, of course, I can say I have been very busy, but that would just be an excuse…. I am going to (try) start writing again on an even more regular basis than I used to; also, because I have been writing mostly technical articles in the past mostly geared towards fellow developers, I feel I am leaving a lot out about other topics. This blog is, after all, a personal blog about me and my thoughts and, although a geek at heart, I have opinions about other things other than geekstuff (believe it or not…). For those few...

Cheat Sheets for Developers

Posted by on 17th September, 2005

Lets face it, unless you have a photographic memory, no developer can remember all the different functions, options, tags, etc. that exist. Documentation can be cumbersome at times, that's why I like cheat sheets. They are quick references that feature the most commonly forgotten things on a specific topic. You can print them out and hang them on your wall, or just keep them handy in your bookmarks for quick reference. Here are over 30 cheatsheets that developers might find useful… [button link=”http://www.petefreitag.com/item/455.cfm” color=”#FFFFCC” size=”1″ style=”4″ dark=”1″]read...

Large Accent Audio Database

Posted by on 29th July, 2005

Everyone who speaks a language, speaks it with an accent. A particular accent essentially reflects a person's linguistic background. When people listen to someone speak with a different accent from their own, they notice the difference, and they may even make certain biased social judgments about the speaker. The speech accent archive is established to uniformly exhibit a large set of speech accents from a variety of language backgrounds. Native and non-native speakers of English all read the same English paragraph and are carefully recorded. Google Maps transparency

Posted by on 7th July, 2005

Google Maps (maps.google.com) is, without question, a very cool tool and very cleverly designed. Now that Google has recently added a feature that allows you to view a satellite view of the area in focus and exposed the application's API, we are seeing some impressive implementations of visualizing maps. This particular one, allows you to superset a transparent "streetmap" over the satellite view. AJAX in ASP.NET 2.0 or not?

Posted by on 30th June, 2005

No, not Ajax, Amsterdam football team. The other Ajax… the Asynchroneous Javascript and XML kind. A recent article by CNet hints that Microsoft is building software, code-named Atlas, that provides developers with tools designed to ease creation of AJAX-style applications. "Developers can use the Atlas software through Microsoft's Visual Studio 2005 development tools and the Web development framework ASP.Net 2.0, both of which are expected to ship in November." But….then there is this comment from the folks at MSDN product feedback in reply to a suggestion of officially adding AJAX support to Whidbey/ASP.NET 2.0: "Thank you for your suggestion. AJAX is definitively gaining attention and is something that the...

The Ultimate Google Guide

Posted by on 15th June, 2005

On occasions I have to look for a particular filetype or need to filter out search results from my searches with Google and end up probably missing what I was looking for. I may not be writing my search query specific enough. Of course I know there are some more operators besides the common ones, but didn't know exactly which. Nancy Blachman from The Google Guide has written a cheatsheet with the advanced operators to improve accuracy and speed in your searches with Google. A nice site overall with many other Google features… [button link=”http://www.googleguide.com/advanced_operators_reference.html” color=”#FFFFCC” size=”1″ style=”4″ dark=”1″]read...
